Darjeeling beyond Tea Gardens: Top Tourist Places, Attractions of ‘The Queen of the Hills’

Dec 7, 2021

Located in the foothills of the Himalayas, Darjeeling is a renowned tourist destination of the country. Known for its majestic hills, meandering rivers and lush green tea gardens, Darjeeling attracts thousands of tourists every year.

Here is a list of top tourist places and attractions in Darjeeling that you must include in the itinerary: Darjeeling Himalayan Railway

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, popularly known as Toy Train, is a narrow gauge locomotive that runs between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling in West Bengal. It was built in the British era between 1879 and 1881 and on 2 December 1999, UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site.

A journey in the Darjeeling Toy Train is an outstanding experience with perfectly textured mountains and picturesque villages gracing your way.

Tiger Hill

Darjeeling is a favorite destination for mountain lovers. And Tiger Hill is a site that offers them a panoramic view of Mount Everest and Kanchenjunga together.

Tiger Hill is most famous for its mesmerising sunrise. The view of snow-capped mountains with sea of clouds is breathtaking. The magnificent view attracts thousands of nature-lovers from over the country, every year.

Himalayan Mountaineering Institute:

The institute is recognized as one of the best mountaineering institutes in the world and is often referred to as the Mecca of Indian Mountaineering. Founded on November 4th, 1954 by then Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the institute commemorates the first successful ascent of Mount Everest by late Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary. The premier institute offers various mountaineering and rock climbing courses.

Darjeeling Ropeway

Darjeeling is best known for its extraordinary beauty — the lush green valleys and majestic rivers. And the best way of enjoying the amusing view is by taking a ride in the Darjeeling ropeway. It’s also called the Rangeet Valley Passenger Cable Car as it takes you through the valley and the river Little Rangeet. To board the cable car you need to reach Singamari which is 3 kilometres from the Darjeeling Chowk Bazaar.

Nightingale Park

The Shrubbery Nightingale Park is ideal for relishing the stupendous view of the Kanchenjunga ranges. Locals and tourists come here to unwind and recharge themselves after a tiresome day.

When the British had been ruling India, the park was known as ‘The Shrubbery’. Then, it was the private courtyard of Sir Thomas Tartan’s Bungalow.

The pandemic era stayed beyond estimations. The prolonged confinements led to losses in business, affected mental health and disrupted social lives. Amid tough times, the only stress-buster that delivered assured results was- travelling. The relaxation in COVID-19 restrictions gave people the opportunity to plan a holiday and soothe strained muscles. And Darjeeling has come out to be one of the most preferred destinations by tourist to rejoice their getaway.

Given the potential of this destination, there are many holiday homes that are coming around the place. Axis Ecorp too is venturing into the same with the launch of Axis KNCZ. The project will pack all the state of the art features of a modern day living and offer a place to relax among the hills.
